Care for the Body Without Clinging to It

This does not mean that perfect health will make everything go as we wish. Even when we eat well, live regularly, and rest enough, the body does not always follow our plans. We age, illness arises, and unexpected changes come. This does not make caring for the body pointless. It means that we need to understand that the body, too, is formed by conditions for a time and continually changes.

Think of a bicycle that has been ridden for many years. To travel safely, we check the air in the tires, adjust the brakes, and tighten loose parts. Neglecting it can turn a small fault into a serious danger. Yet no matter how carefully we maintain it, the tire tread wears down, the chain stretches, and parts eventually need replacement. Caring for a bicycle does not mean forcing it to remain forever as it was when new. It means seeing its present condition clearly and giving it the care it needs.

Our body is like this. It is not wise to use it carelessly, and it is also not wise to be seized by fear whenever it changes. Do not ignore the body's signals, but do not cling to the belief that you can be happy only if the body remains forever young and healthy. Receive needed treatment and rest, exercise in a suitable way, and choose a pace that fits today's body.

Body and mind are not separate. When the body is exhausted, thoughts easily become harsh. When the mind stays tense for a long time, the body also becomes rigid and painful. Therefore, do not try to care only for the body or discipline only the mind; observe how both are changing together. When you are ill, instead of blaming yourself, notice whether pain and fear are intensifying each other. Resting when rest is needed and asking for help when help is needed are also forms of practice.

Understanding the body's impermanence does not mean giving up on it or thinking only about death. Rather, it means recognizing what a precious condition this body is today and using it well. Offer a kind word, help with your two hands, and walk toward what is wholesome while you are able. The body will not remain forever as we wish, but we can choose what relationships and conditions we create with it now.

Therefore, value your health without clinging to health alone. Observe bodily change without fear, give the body the care it needs, and continue practice at a pace that is possible today. When the mind that grasps at the body becomes a little lighter, we can care for both body and mind more accurately.

Care for today's body without clinging to it, and observe the changes of body and mind together.

To continue training the mind, we must care well for the body. Yet no matter how carefully we manage it, the body does not always remain as we wish. Do not ignore its signals. Give it the care it needs without clinging to permanent health, and practice at a pace that fits today.
